The MOLNIYA 3-50 satellite, also known as Molniya-3, is a communication satellite manufactured by NPOPMR and owned by VKSR/GPKS. Launched on July 8, 1999, from the Plesetsk Missile State Testing Range (PLMSC) using a Molniya 8K78M launch vehicle, it entered stable orbit the following day. The satellite has dimensions of 3.6 meters in length and 1.6 meters in diameter, with an additional span of 8.1 meters for its deployable solar arrays, providing 1000 W of power along with batteries. It weighs approximately 1750 kg at launch and has a dry mass of 1700 kg. The satellite is equipped with a KDU-414A (S5.114) or 11D414NS motor, has a lifetime expectancy of three years, and its shape is described as cylindrical with six panels. The mission objective was to provide communication services, utilizing the KAUR-2 configuration typical for its class.
